OHIO JOBS STRATEGY
United for Good Jobs and Strong Communities

Ohio was once a place where people came to work hard, contribute to communities, raise families, and see their children thrive. Entrepreneurial ideas, worker brains and muscle, and public investment led to well-trained, industrious workers, successful companies, good jobs and shared prosperity. Our investments in roads, bridges, freight rail, the electric grid, schools, universities, and industries built a state where opportunity was widely available…. Unfortunately, we’ve gotten away from this sort of investment, neglected our public systems, and forgotten how important it is to have every Ohioan contribute to our economy. We must recommit to a solid public sector that can deliver the education, safety and essentials that Ohioans need; the parks, libraries and community centers that enrich our lives; and the infrastructure that gets us to work, gets products to market, and sustains our communities.

Dear Lieutenant Governor Lee Fisher:

We appreciated your willingness to meet with the Mahoning Valley Organizing Collaborative (MVOC) and our delegation of faith based, neighborhood, non-profit, business and political leaders on January 9, 2009. We found the discussion with your staff productive, but remain concerned about the NSP allocation to the City of Youngstown and look forward to working with you on the commitment to find addtiional resources to address these issues.

We cannot allow another year to go by with millions of Americans lacking basic health care coverage or being forced into bankruptcy and despair trying to afford coverage.

Every day that health care reform is delayed, the entire progressive agenda we voted for in the most historic election of our lives is more at risk. It is time to stand for regular citizens who need quality health care, family-supporting jobs, secure housing and quality education.

On Tuesday, August 2, 100 Youngstown residents expressed their frustration with the inaction and ineffectiveness of the city’s Code Enforcement Program in a letter to Building and Grounds Commissioner Sean T. McKinney.

The letter was delivered to both McKinney and new Mayor Chuck Sammarone Tuesday afternoon.  The two-page document cites specific instances where the program has faltered, specifically in the execution of targeted sweeps of the Wick Park neighborhood on the city’s north side.

MVOC's 2009-2010 Annual Report, documenting the last 18 months of significant accomplishments in our organizing campaigns. Some of these include the passage of land bank reform at the state level, the passage of health care reform including funding for new community health clinics for the Valley, the creation of two Community Development Corporations (YNDC and YTNP) and progress on a host of local issues ranging from the clean-up of illegal dumping to negotiating better living conditions for manufactured home residents.

We hope that you will join us in the year to come and that we might be able to look back at this moment as the turning point in the Valley where together we shifted the course to one of sustainability, equity, and renewed prosperity.

On behalf of area legislators, community leaders, and key stakeholders in Mahoning Valley, we would like to request a meeting with you to discuss the foreclosure crisis facing our metropolitan area. Specifically, we would like to discuss the allocation of the State of Ohio's $116.8 million Neighborhood Stabilization Program to our community and the ways in which we can work together to address this crisis which has disproportionately affected our region.

US Senator meets with key community leaders on Monday, April 13th – and will join them again on Friday for a Health Care Reform Rally this Friday April 17th at Forest Hill Presbyterian Church in Cleveland Heights.
