Organizers Assist in Receipt of Funds for Valley Projects

With its experience in grassroots canvassing and community outreach, the Mahoning Valley Organizing Collaborative (MVOC) played a critical role in securing over $200,000 for local government collaboration projects in the Mahoning Valley.

This summer’s contest was sponsored by the Fund for Our Economic Future, as part of the EfficentGovNow program. This initiative aims to accelerate government collaboration and efficiency by providing funding to three collaborative government projects located within the 16-county Northeastern Ohio region.

A total of 65 project proposals were submitted; 39 of these projects met the eligibility criteria and nine were selected as finalists. Two of the nine projects were located in the Mahoning Valley. Nearly 13,500 qualified votes were accepted.

The Regional Chamber, nonprofit organizations, local governments, and residents joined forces to ensure top placement in the contest. MVOC organized community members to “get out the vote” at summer festivals, neighborhood meetings, grocery stores, and the Eastwood Mall. These collaborative efforts propelled the Mahoning Valley’s projects into the lead, ensuring funding in what resulted in a very tight race to the finish.

“Winning those awards – it's not everything, but it's a great way to create a sense of hope, enthusiasm, and excitement about the kind of innovation that is happening in the Valley,'' said MVOC executive director, Kirk Noden. “It's also really exciting that we can come together in the Valley, that grassroots can come together with the chamber to work on a project like this. That in itself is really positive.”
