Can you stay in your dorm during summer?
Whether or not a dorm would work for your family depends on your travel style, individual needs and when you can travel. Remember, most dorm accommodations are only available for non-student renters during the summer months when school isn’t in session.
Can you leave stuff in your dorm over winter break?
Yes you can leave stuff. However, maintenance staff may come in the room, so do not have an expectation of privacy. If there are some valuable things that you want to leave I believe on the desks there is a drawer that you could secure with your own lock. I left my valuable stuff in that drawer and it was fine.
Why do dorms close during breaks?
Some colleges in the U.S. essentially close down during winter break. They use that time to clean the dorms thoroughly. Some schools allow students to stay over during winter break.

Do you change dorms every year in college?
Dorm assignments are usually for an entire school year, or two semesters; fall and spring. Students usually move out of their dorm at the end of the spring term, and move back into a dorm a few days before the beginning of the next fall term. This is the usual time to change dorms.
Do you keep the same dorm all 4 years?
It does indeed depend on the culture of the university, the availability and cost of nearby housing, and whether the university allows them to stay in the dorms for all four years (some universities don’t).
Are dorms separated by gender?
Co-ed dorms (meaning the buildings, not the individual rooms) may still separate genders, often by floors or “wings.” But many colleges just mix things up, with female and male roommates living next door or across the hall from each other.
