How does a mentally ill person behave?
The outward signs of a mental illness are often behavioral. A person may be extremely quiet or withdrawn. Conversely, they may burst into tears, have great anxiety or have outbursts of anger. Even after treatment has started, someindividuals with a mental illness can exhibit anti-social behaviors.
What causes mental status changes?
In infants and children, the most common causes of altered mental status include infection, trauma, metabolic changes, and toxic ingestion. Young adults most often present with altered mental status secondary to toxic ingestion or trauma.
What causes sudden mental confusion?

What are signs of altered mental status?
Characteristics may include confusion, disorientation, agitation, inattention, and disorganized behavior. Patients may even develop psychotic symptoms of hallucinations and delusions. Delirium may be associated with psychiatric, encephalopathic, or intracranial causes of altered mental status.
Can dehydration cause altered mental status?
Mental status changes begin with mild dehydration and worsen with each stage, ending in delirium. In moderate dehydration, short-term memory loss occurs. Once an older person is thirsty, they are already mildly dehydrated.
