The 4t65e is inherently stronger than a 4t60e; but lack of auxiliary cooler, cheap seals without enough lip, poor PCS design/placement, and non-hardened parts where they are needed all contribute to early failures of these units. All of this is correctable with aftermarket parts (upgrades, shift kits, etc.)
What is the difference between a 4T65E and an 4T65E HD?
Physically they are about the same and internally identical but there is really not much at all that interchanges between the two. The big enhancement to the 4T65E was that it uses a pressure control solenoid so the pcm can control line pressure instead of using a vacuum line like the older 4T60E.
How much power can a 4T65E HD handle?
A stock tranny should hold about 300 WHP, as long as the shifts aren’t too harsh. Otherwise the IS will snap. As long as you keep the shifting reasonable and start raising the power gradually, IMO the chain will go first.

Is a 3800 engine good?
I would have to say that the Series II 3800 is excellent. My old car only has like 70,000 on it but it still runs like a dream. My newer Grand Prix (Series III) has 52,000 and is also running excellent save for what I believe to be a clogged fuel filter. As for the Grand Prix themselves, they are excellent cars.
